Precious to God

Gentleness (Nine Fruits of the Spirit)

by Robert Strand

PRAOTES, (Greek) meaning: Gentle, mild, meek,  grace of the soul.

"Understand that as a fruit of the Spirit, gentleness is never the result of weakness.  It requires great inner strength to really be gentle.  People who are weak in character, when invested with a bit of power, are too often rough and unkind because they are weak.  Such people despise gentleness in others as a sign of weakness.  Gentleness is really strength under control."

This is a skinny-little (I mean "slender☺") book study of gentleness.  At times I found myself wanting to do a little extra research, so I could also say that though not thorough, it IS a thought provoking study.  My favorite illustration offered by the author is of Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem.  Palm branches are a symbol of victory, and for the early church, an expression of resurrection triumph over death.  Gentle Jesus? yes! ...who came in humility with POWER that conquered sin and death.

"but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious."
 I Peter 3:4

I received a copy of this book for the purpose of review.

  1. This is so good because my prayer lately has been, "Lord make me gentle & meek". ...Something I cannot do without His strength. Took years before I got what you are saying...that gentleness is actually strength. How refreshingly opposite from the world. Thanks for the encouragement. ~ jen
